As part of Jornadas do Mar 2025, CIIMAR, one the BioProtect partners, hosted the workshop “Deep Sea: Be a Taxonomist for a Day”, offering participants an immersive experience in deep-sea biodiversity and taxonomy!
Jornadas do Mar is a student Congress dedicated to Marine Biology and the discussion and presentation of the most current and relevant investigations and discoveries in the area. It consists of 3 days with the presence of more than 30 speakers divided into lectures, workshops, round tables and debates. More than 200 participants from all over the country take part in face-to-face and online formats.
During the “Deep Sea: Be a Taxonomist for a Day” workshop, participants explored:
- Deep-sea habitats and ecosystems.
- Taxonomic methods, including morphological and molecular identification techniques.
- The importance of biodiversity data and species modeling in deep-sea research.
In the hands-on session, participants observed sponge spicules and coral sclerites under the microscope and identified species using illustrated taxonomic guides. The workshop concluded with a mini-quiz, reinforcing key concepts in a fun and interactive way!
By making deep-sea science accessible and engaging, BioProtect is helping shape the future of marine conservation and sustainable management, aligning with the UN SDGs and the EU Mission: Restore our Ocean and Waters.
