Citizen Science & Public Participation

BioProtect will engage citizens through a dedicated methodology that will include the establishment of Communities of Practice (CoP), Citizen Science activities such as annotation of organisms in underwater videos, eDNA samplers, and Public Participation Geographic Information System (PPGIS).

Annotation of organisms in underwater videos

The new citizen science platform, BIIGLE.party (biigle.party), will engage citizen scientists in annotating and classifying organisms and objects in underwater videos.
Invasive species occurence
Citizens in local communities in Iceland DS will be trained to use portable eDNA science samplers. eDNA samples will be collected from harbours with known occurrence (e.g., ballast waters) of invasive species.
Vulnerable Marine Ecosystem (VME) indicator taxa
A “VME-ID” app will be developed and deployed to commercial fishermen (Portugal DS) for the identification and reporting of bycatch of VME indicator taxa (corals, sponges).
